The hotel is well located and the cafe is pricey by local standards (but dirt cheap by western standards) and the food is fine. My big objection was being charged for ink marks on a sheet which was there when we arrived. It was a very disappointing and unfortunate end to an otherwise good stay. One ink mark is being charged out against each person who uses the sheet.

Sunrise Hostel is one of the good hostels in Beijing...and there are a good many of them. The location is excellent....walking distance to Tiamen Square and Forbidden City...also Warfunjing Street is just 5 minutes away...and a short walk away, is the "do not miss" attraction , the night market, selling all kinds of food on skewers,(and do savour the unexpected delights). The rooms are reasonably big and clean, though could have been more so..the aircon works ...and you can pay a little more for an ensuite. The hostel is all on one level, an added plus point to the older travellers.Lockers are available at no extra payment and also internet. The attached cafe gives reasonably good breakfast as well as some local dishes..but why eat here when all the delightful Chinese food is just a stones throw away. And finally the Reception is manned by youngsters who speak very good English...another plus point in China...and they are always willing to help in arranging tours, renting cycles, maps, and giving advise on how to take care and protect yourself and not get cheated....something very very common in Beijing. And take care...lots of fake currency in circulation.Avoid taxis and take the metros wherever you need to go...safer and cheaper.

As most people have pointed out, the location of this hostel is very good. Very much in the centre of Beijing, it is easy to reach and easy to get to all main attractions. The hostel itself is nothing special and one of the least ones I've stayed at in China (which is probably due to the fact that this is Beijing and not some small village in another province). Rooms are small, beds are small, and cleanliness is just about enough. Nothing too bad though, so I guess it is an OKish place to stay.

We stayed here for 6 nights in a standard twin room with a window overlooking the adjacent lane way. The basic twin rooms appeared to be on the other side of the hall and had a window that faced directly onto the adjacent rooms (so not much natural light). The room was basic and clean with reasonably comfortable single beds. It was rather musty smelling when we first arrived but opening the window during the day helped with the smell. The bathroom smelt very musty compared to most places we've stayed at in China so we left the extractor fan on when we were in the room. Other than that we thought the room was fine. We received a 20RMB meal coupon upon check-in for each night we stayed. This worked out to be an average free breakfast per day which wasn't too bad. We thought the rest of the food on the menu was priced on the high side, especially the snacks. However, there was Beijing draft beer on tap for 15RMB or 10RMB between 2 and 5PM. On our first night there we also had the free hot pot party – it was tasty and the servings were generous. Tiananmen Square East and Wanfujing Station on Line 1 were both only 10 minutes walk from the hostel. Although the location is central to Wanfujing shopping street, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, we found the location more a curse than a blessing. Tour buses were constantly stopping and pulling up along the main street, dropping groups off at the tour endorsed restaurants just near the hostel lane. The restaurants in the immediate area were all relatively expensive and rather average tasting compared to what you can get elsewhere in Beijing. This is not surprising considering the hostel is located in the main tourist zone of the nation's capital, but it was still the first time we felt like we were getting ripped off for trying local food in China. The corner shop near the hostel also liked to jack up the prices on the drinks they sold us, forgetting that they sold it to us earlier at a lower price (all foreigners look the same I guess). So far we've found shop keepers in China exceedingly honest with prices even though we barely speak two words of Mandarin - we were actually surprised (or disappointed) that the 'tourist tax' system has well and truly caught on in some parts of Beijing. The night markets and food streets are nearby but most of it is the tacky tourist rubbish you can get just about anywhere in the country. The food at the food street market area just up the road also overpriced and pretty average. If it's your first time in Beijing, or you have limited time in the city then the location isn't a bad bet, otherwise I think there are much better options available. We found the service from the staff excellent at times and not so good at others. They kindly helped us ring around for a hotel but then wouldn't call a taxi for the train station when it was raining and during peak hour. During the day the staff would often just hang out in the bar and watch a movie (loudly), sit on the computers / couch at reception or flirt with some of the longer term guests. We got the impression that most of the staff would hang around the hostel regardless of whether they were on duty or not. When the boss was around we noticed this didn't happen so much. Our room didn't have wi-fi so we had to sit in the bar to use the internet. It's OK if you're having a drink or eating but not so good if you just want to relax or use the internet quietly/Skype. Unfortunately there is no other common area so it's the bar or the one couch in reception. We had already spent a week in Beijing and had a few things we needed to organise for onward travel so this was a bit of inconvenience for us. All in all a fairly disappointing experience at Tian An Men Sunrise Hostel. There are plenty of other great budget/hostel options for a similar price in Beijing so do your research and choose wisely.

I stayed there on August 2011 as part of a solo travel to Beijing. I was very disappointed by the rooms which are old, dated and badly furnished. The hotel is well located to visit the forbidden city but very far from the rest of the city. I would recommend people to stay elsewhere unless you are looking for a backpacker scene. That is the only good thing about the hostel, there are lot of young guys meeting. Also the staff is very nice. Stay elsewhere if you are over 25 and looking for something a bit comfortable and convenient.

I stayed here for 1 week. Pretty good hostel. Good location. Staff are very helpful and kind. 2 toilets and 2 showers in the hall where I lived. the rooms are ok. aircon, bed and "locker". The food and drinks in the bar is good and cheap. Easy to meet fellow travelers. Internett is kinda slow. but who cares? Go for it!
