We traveled to Xinjiang province through China Odyssey Tours. Amazing company that will make sure you are well taken care of while you are in China. This was the most interesting part of our trip. We visited Urumqi, Turpan and Kashgar.I felt like I was in another country. The customs, the food, the culture, the people, completely different from the rest of China. We visited the heavenly mountain and saw the Kazakh Yurts dotting the very high moutains that leads to the heavenly lake or Celestial Mountain. From there we went to Kashgar, a very important city along the silk road that connects China to the middle east with it's persian carpets and original handcrafted items found in the Grand Bazzar of Sunday Bazzar. We also visited Turpan with it's amazing water system, invented in ancient times, that provides water to the entire area. This is a city in the desert, an oasis that is as green as green can get in the midst of a very hot dry desert. A must see if you are in China.I found the Uyghur people very friendly with deep roots. Their people and culture can be traced to before the time of Christ to the Uyghur kingdom. If you travel with China Odyssey tour and go the Urumqi you must ask for Nur Muhamad to be your tour guide. Very knowledgeable and acommodating guide. If you go to Kashgar, you must ask for Mohammed. It's one of their manager, but excellenttour guide with lots of patience and knowledge about kashgar. He will walk you throughan area where everything is hand made just as it was in ancient times, including their Nan bread. Delicious! Must go here to get the full Uyghur experience.

This is really Central Asia disguised as China, with the exception of Urumchi, which is very much like other Han Chinese cities, with high-rise apartment houses, a population of more than 2 million people, horrible traffic and glitzy shopping malls. The Sunday Animal Market in Kashgar is utterly amazing in scope, the Uigur people were hospitable and warm, the Uigur foood -- naan and yogurt, noodles, shisk kebabs, pilaf and delicious ripe melons -- exceptionally good. Riding camels near the Flaming Mountains was a high-light for most of our group. The hotels in Kashgar and Turpan were not western-friendly with rock-hard beds, no western breakfasts. and few English-speaking staff but the surroundings and sights compensated for the lack of comfort for a few nights.

The travel along Xinjiang Province comprising the route of the Gobi Desert , the beautitful Kanas North western lake , the moon lake, the China Ghost Town, Turpan the grape paradise, the Mugao Grotto of thousands of caves with the Buddhist sculptures , the paintinsg and the suteras and of course Shih Huang Ti China's unifier and his post death world fund in the the underground city of Xian is an EXPERIENCE.Several UNSECO sites such as XINAN, the MUGAO Grotto is amazing and gives you insights into China's thousands of years civilization and the grandeur of things.Along the silk road you will also see the richest lands of natural resources of China such as Oil fields , the wind farms .On a more humane level you will see how the nomadic tribes live, eat and sleep .poorest of the poor and not very initiated but providing a great livelihood for themselves and the region. The beautiful cultural dances and performances by the beautiful UYGHUR women and men.It is a very enriching and enlightening experience and one can understand why that route was taken by the merchants of the centuries ago and appreciate the development of China today.
