I loved walking trails, although I think it is not necessary to make them that way - every path is made of wood including (too many) stairs. It is attractive with some platforms and viewing points, but I would prefer natural paths... Spending around 3 hours there was enough. And do try wasabi! Rare opportunity to get fresh one in Alishan or stalls near the temple.

Alishan is one of my favorite places in Taiwan. The forest is stunningly beautiful. Walking into Alishan makes it feel like you have stepped back in time. The largest drawback is the high number of Chinese tourists at Alishan. It can make it difficult to explore Ali Mountain at times.

Taiwan's best scenes are its people, a Chinese author once wrote and yes he is correct. The train is a joke. it only goes half way and takes a bit more than 2 hours. For first 70 minutes you see nothing but ugly Taiwanese architecture if it can be called actual architecture. After that you see some hills and greens and some clouds. These are no way mountains. Think Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alps. Those are mountains. These are hills, filled with once again ugly homes and power lines. We live in San Francisco and we travel more than 260 days a year. No one should come to Taiwan to see Alishan. If you are here for some other reasons, you should try to come here so that you can say you did it. But, try to take the bus both ways. We took the train, then took the shuttle bus to Shizhuo. From there one more bus to Alishan. All along we kept thinking it is so underwhelming. However, the views from the bus is much better than from the train. Bus takes a bit over 2 hours from Chiayi. Just returned from NE India and there the clouds over Naga Hills and Khasi Hills and the aboriginals and the native culture all were actually spectacular. Alishan is NOT.

Came here for viewing the sun-rise. You can either take a train up or choose to go with a mini-bus. The latter is more convenient. When you arrive at the 7-Eleven near the Visitors Centre, there will be someone asking you if you wanna join their sun-rise morning tour.Forest-trekking is good as there are walking trails in place. Go to the train station for a map showing suggested trekking route.
