The Hakka circular houses are typically designed for defensive purposes and consist of one entrance and no windows at the ground level. The strong walls are made of rammed earth embedded with pebbles and stones. But the interior is mostly wood.The tulou 土楼, are often round in shape and are divided into many compartments and rooms for food storage, living quarters, ancestral temple, armoury etc. Each tulou has 4 floors with hundreds of staircases.You have to get a tourist guide in order to better understand the origin, history and architecture of tulou. One cannot just walk in as these circular houses are usually locked. Arrange with a local tourist agency and they will do everything for youThese Hakka houses have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. A must see in this region.
