This is as charming as any of the Unesco gardens, but made more so by the lack of crowds, and mostly locals visiting. Lovely pathways, pavillions and plantings in the traditional style of Suzhou. At first we thought there was a school nearby, with all the chattering overheard, but it was just the sounds of the locals enjoying the teahouse which is directly on the small lake. It is difficult to find; we were checking a map when my wife looked up and read "Entrance" on the wall; we were there. Upon leaving we realized that the name of the garden, in Chinese characters, was written on alley walls with an arrow pointing in its direction. Truly a gem, a short walk fro ShanTang street, worth discovering.

Since I speak Chinese, I asked two taxi drivers to take me. Neither had heard of it or even recognized its location on a map. The third driver took me as close as he could. I then wandered through interesting alleyways (asking periodically for directions) until I arrived. I think the entry fee was rmb ten, which is about right to see a relatively small garden--probably more typical of the gardens in the old days than the heavily touted "big" ones like the Humble Administrator's Garden. Don't misunderstand me, both are worth the time. Once you've seen a couple or several, I think you'll find yourself wondering about other things to do. One idea might be to just wander around neighborhoods that have a small garden, and, if you like the feel, try another one.
